A Visit to Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station

As my stay continued in Nagpur I decided to visit the famous Tadoba National Park of the city. As I was heading towards my destination I noticed a giant power station complex on the way to Tadoba. I decided to halt there for a while and survey the entire industrial area. It is a well maintained complex and is a main source of employment to many residents of the town of Chandrapur. Earlier this area was quite backward but according to local residents since the establishment of this mega power plant the area has transformed into a fast developing city of Maharashtra.

Owned by the Maharashtra State Electricity Board the Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station also abbreviated as CSTPS is the biggest pit head power station of the state that runs on thermal energy. It is one of the thermal energy giants of the whole nation among all state Electricity boards. This eminent industrial zone is located at a distance of 6 kilometres from the city of Chandrapur. This giant project has an ultimate capacity of power generation of 2340 MW.

The CSTPS generates around one- fourth of the total energy output of the state. It has a daily electricity generation capacity of 52 + MUs. This thermal power plant comprises of 7 units and the unit capacity in mega watts is 4*210 and 3* 500. It is also a recipient of the Greentech Award. The CSTPS is first among the SEBs in the country to have claimed this award for green technology.

Hence the mega thermal power station also complies by the environmental standards and is heading rapidly towards earning carbon credit points so as to keep its emission levels as low as possible. The power station is designed in a strategic location which doesn’t harm the environmental quality and quality of life of the people of the city.

Moreover this power plant is a perfect example and trendsetter in the arena of corporate environmental responsibility, by use of clean and green technology for energy generation. It was a fortunate opportunity for me to have been able to visit this complex and get an insight of the major role of industries in the development of infrastructure keeping in mind the environmental costs. This is the need of the very hour if we dream of a sustainable future.
