The Kamala Nehru Zoo is also popularly known as the Kankaria Zoo being located on the shores of the famous Kankaria Lake which is the largest lake in Gujarat in terms of shore length. The lake makes the zoo site perfect for ecological and zoological preservation. The Kamala Nehru Zoological Park was established in the year 1951 by a British-Indian zoologist Rueben David. The park has since then remained a popular attraction for general tourists and wildlife enthusiasts. The conditions in the zoo are quite favourable for all resident species and the zoo has often been praised for its humane and methodical approach towards the creatures. The park employees care for the animals as if they were their family.
The park is spread in an area of 21 acres. All of this land was provided by the Government of India under the then Prime Minister of India
Jawaharlal Nehru and hence the park was later named the Kamala Nehru Zoological Park after his late wife. The founder of the Zoo Dr. David was also later awarded with a Padma Shri acknowledging his
contribution towards wildlife conservation and zoological research. The zoo also generated a lot of employment in the region and made Kankaria even more popular among tourists. The zoo won the
Best Zoological Park of Asia award in 1974.
The zoo consists of some rare species of animals ranging from mammals to amphibians and reptiles. The Black Buck is endangered species which is preserved and taken care for in the zoological park in Ahmedabad. The Chinkaras, Lions, Emu, Primates like Rhesus Monkeys and Reptiles like the Anaconda are also quite popular features of the zoo. The spotted deer and the White Albino were the most adorable beings that I saw at the zoo. Photography within the zoo is largely permitted with certain restrictions.
The zoo also has a zoological museum which many people miss while they visit the park. The museum is a must see not only for wildlife enthusiast and experts but also for the general tourists like me. The fossils and reconstructions in the museum are rare and realistic respectively. My visit to the Kamala Nehru Zoological Park was a treat for the mind and soul.
